- The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Our Lady of Victory is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.
- Standards for selection are established by the national office of NJHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs.
- For the scholarship criterion, a student must have an average of 87% in each quarter in every subject for the school year in which they are applying. Once inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, students must maintain this average.
- To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council reviews disciplinary records. A student must not have served a detention. Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Student Activity Information Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is also required. Students will be asked to answer questions about their service, leadership, character, and citizenship experiences.
- Two letters of recommendation, to be filled out by someone other than a teacher or family member, are also required. These forms and the Student Activity Information Forms are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule. Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection.
- This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held quarterly during the school year, and participation in the chapter service projects, as well as individual service projects. Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter adviser, Tricia DiTullio, by email at [email protected] or by phone at 347-8863.
